Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before embarking on your Gemstone Safari.

  • What is Gemstone Safari and how is it different from buying retail?
Gemstone Safari is a highly curated, private experience that takes you—personally—behind the closed doors of Bangkok’s top 1% of gemstone dealers in the world, all of whom have offices in Bangkok, the Center of the Universe for Colored Stones. These are the very same dealers that global brands like Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., and Bulgari rely on. Unlike traditional retail, there are no middlemen, no inflated markups, and no showroom antics. You acquire connoisseur-level Rubies, Sapphires, and Emeralds—directly—at wholesale prices.
  • Who is the owner of Gemstone Safari, and why should I trust his guidance?
Joseph Schall is a published GIA Gemologist with over 30 years of international experience, including a decade living in Bangkok. He specializes in sourcing Pigeon Blood Unheated Burmese Rubies, Cornflower Blue Kashmir Sapphires, Colombian Emeralds, and other elite investment gemstones. Joseph personally curates each stone with integrity, precision, and the eye of a seasoned collector—not a salesperson.
  • What’s the minimum budget needed to begin collecting at a serious level?
While some connoisseurs begin with $100,000 most serious collectors invest $100,000 to $500,000+ to build a portfolio of appreciating, multi-lab-certified gemstones. That said, each journey is tailored specifically to your comfort and goals.
  • Why do investment-grade Rubies, Sapphires, and Emeralds appreciate in value?
These gems are finite natural resources—particularly when unheated, untreated, and of elite origin. Their scarcity increases year after year while global demand among collectors, connoisseurs, and investors steadily rises. True collector-grade stones often appreciate 15–25% annually, especially when sourced at wholesale rather than retail prices.
  • How do Bangkok wholesale prices compare to retail?
Retail markups anywhere in the world typically range from 300% to 500%. By purchasing directly from Bangkok's top-tier wholesalers—the same sources used by luxury brands—you gain immediate built-in equity. It’s not uncommon for our clients to acquire stones appraised at double (or more) than what they paid.
  • What are the fees for your services?
Clients are only responsible for covering Joseph’s travel expenses—typically business-class airfare and hotel accommodations. This is customary in the world of high-net-worth services, where trusted advisors are often flown in to secure assets or negotiate acquisitions on behalf of the client. There are no hourly consulting fees or hidden charges.
  • How do you get compensated—and do you take a commission from me as well?
Joseph receives a small commission from the seller of the gemstone—never from you. Unlike auction houses that often “double dip,” Joseph works transparently on a single commission basis. This creates a fiduciary relationship which ensures your interests are fully aligned with his, and there’s no incentive to inflate prices or push a particular stone.
  • What happens during a Gemstone Safari?
You’ll be met personally in Bangkok and escorted into elite private offices that are off-limits to the general public. Over several days, you’ll examine stones with Joseph at your side, evaluating origin, cut, clarity, price and certification. The experience is as educational as it is exhilarating.
  • Who will I meet, and how private is the process?
You’ll be introduced to some of the most respected wholesale dealers in the industry—individuals who normally only work with dealers, not the public. The entire process is confidential, discreet, and appointment-only. You will never be part of a group tour.
  • Can I have jewelry custom-made while I’m there?
Absolutely. We collaborate with some of Bangkok’s finest custom jewelers and master craftsmen. If you choose, we can create heirloom-quality pieces using your newly acquired gemstones—made to your specifications, and often at a fraction of what you’d pay in the West.
  • Are the gemstones ethically sourced?
Yes. Every gemstone offered through Gemstone Safari is mined responsibly, often in direct partnership with the source-country miners. We support small-scale operations that ensure fair labor practices and environmental responsibility. Ethical sourcing is not a trend for us—it’s a commitment.
  • How can I be sure my stones are natural and untreated?
Every gem we offer is accompanied by independent laboratory certification from the world’s top authorities (GIA, AGL, GRS, and others). These labs verify origin, treatment status, and authenticity. We specialize in unheated, untreated stones—especially rare finds like Pigeon Blood Burmese Rubies and Kashmir Sapphires.
  • Will my gems come with certificates? Which labs do you use?
Yes. All gemstones are accompanied by certificates from internationally respected labs such as the GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGL (American Gemological Laboratories), GRS (GemResearch Swisslab), and others depending on the stone and origin. Multi-lab verification is available.
  • What if I want to resell my gemstones in the future?
Most clients hold their gems as appreciating assets, but reselling is absolutely possible. Because we work with trusted dealers who sell globally, we can often reintroduce your gemstone to the marketplace through the same network you purchased from—often to other collectors or dealers. We handle it all for you. From purchase to eventual resale.
  • Is there a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every Gemstone Safari purchase is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. If for any reason you’re not satisfied, simply return the stone with its certificates in original condition. This rarely occurs—but the offer reflects our confidence and integrity.
  • How do you ensure discretion and client confidentiality?
Your identity, travel arrangements, and purchases are kept strictly confidential. We never share the names or details of our clientele. Trust is the cornerstone of everything we do. That's our reputation in the Trade. That's why we can get you in to see the best Gem dealers in the World.
